Photo-toxic means UV sensitising. It’s important to be aware of the photo-toxic oils in your essential oil skincare blends if you plan on spending time in the sun. These oils can cause UV sensitivity that may last for up to 12 hours after application.
Most essential oils are perfectly fine to be applied before stepping outdoors.
Some organic chemical compounds produced by certain plants, called furanocoumarins, can cause a skin reaction when exposed to strong sunlight. These compounds absorb more UV photons than usual, which can lead to quick tanning or burning of the skin. However, this only applies to topical use. If you are diffusing any of these oils, there is no need for concern.n.
St. John’s Wort, often used as a carrier oil, can increase photo-sensitivity. Avoid applying it before sun exposure.
