What is a diffuser?
A diffuser or sometimes referred to as an aromatherapy diffuser, is an electric or battery-operated device that breaks down Essential Oils into small molecules and then disperses the tiny particles into the air either by heat, nebulizing, or ultrasonics. The purpose of using a diffuser is to evenly disperse these particles at a comfortable concentration that does not overbear a room but essentially provides a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for the user.
Why diffuse?
Inhalation of Essential Oils is a quick and easy way to benefit from these oils. The aromatic molecules dispersed by a diffuser pass through one’s respiratory system which connects one’s nose to the brain. It triggers the olfactory or cranial nerve which contains sensory nerve fibres relating to one’s sense of smell and transmits impulses to the part of the brain that controls emotions. This allows our body to rest, reset and restore itself as the scent of the Essential Oils connects with our emotions and surroundings.
Types of diffusers
There are various types of Essential Oil diffusers which all offer their own unique benefits.
The ULTRASONIC DIFFUSER combines design with the well-being of aromatherapy. This diffuser uses water and electronic frequencies in the diffusion process to create a slight mist, humidifying the atmosphere with a subtle but pleasant fragrance from the Essential Oils used. It is the most popular device on the market, especially in drier climates or air-conditioned rooms. This provides a calming and relaxing effect with its ambient light feature.
The NEBULIZER DIFFUSER respects the chemical properties of Essential Oils and preserves their therapeutic virtues by spreading the droplets of the oils more efficiently and for longer in the air when diffused. This is the most popular means of diffusion by aromatherapists. This device does not use water or heat during diffusion which makes it a low-maintenance choice. For the eco-conscious user, it’s plastic free.
The HEAT DIFFUSER uses heat elements to help the Essential Oils to gradually evaporate into the air. Using heat is an economical yet efficient and silent way to disperse the aroma of Essential Oils throughout an area however, the aromatic benefits of Essential Oils may lessen or change entirely.
The VENTILATION DIFFUSER is a cold diffusion technique which retains all the benefits of Essential Oils. The fan built into the diffuser projects air through the pad soaked with Essential Oils and instantly spreads the scent throughout the room.
The INHALER – with a single breath, it provides all the benefits of the Essential Oils placed on its cotton wick, to breathe better or to relax.
Precautions when diffusing
Diffusers come with a long list of benefits however there is a certain amount of risk involved when using the device. It is recommended to use intermittent diffusion as it is more effective and safer than continuous diffusion. When Essential Oils are diffused they can potentially cause an allergic reaction or trigger asthmatic symptoms as they can cause mucous membrane irritants. Lemongrass, Peppermint, Cinnamon and Thyme are some of the most common Essential Oils that should be diffused with caution.
Diffusing essential oils around babies is not recommended as their sinuses, lungs, and bodies are still developing. Limited diffusing of Essential oils and applying Essential oil blends topically can be used on children over the age of 5 years old with caution. It is advisable to consult with your child’s pediatrician or family doctor before applying the oils.
While it’s not advised to use essential oil diffusers around your pets, you can still apply essential oils topically to your fur babies. However, it’s important to mix the essential oil with a carrier oil such as coconut, jojoba, or olive oil to dilute it. Be sure to apply the blend to the back of your pet’s neck, where they can’t reach it to lick it off, as Oilindo brand oils are meant for external use only.
