As the pace of life continues to accelerate, the pressure we place on ourselves grows right along with it. We are constantly connected, constantly consuming, constantly responding. It’s no wonder so many of us feel the need to step away from social media and the busyness of everyday life just to feel like ourselves again. We promise we will take a break, recharge, and then return to our normal routines.
But what if we don’t always need to get back to “normal”?
The truth is, life changes us. Illness changes us. Loss changes us. Difficult seasons change us. Joy changes us. New experiences change us. Every challenge we face and every milestone we reach leaves a mark, shaping us into someone slightly different from who we were before.
Yet so often, we measure healing by how quickly we can return to our old selves. We compare who we are today to who we used to be, believing that getting back to that former version of ourselves is the goal. Perhaps we have been asking the wrong question.
Instead of wondering, “How do I get back to who I was?” maybe we should be asking, “Who am I now?”
There is something incredibly freeing about becoming curious rather than critical. Curiosity allows us to meet ourselves with kindness instead of judgment. It gives us permission to acknowledge that we have changed, and that change doesn’t always have to be something to resist. Sometimes the gentlest way to reconnect with ourselves is through our senses of smell, sound, sight, touch, and taste.
Take a deep breath and inhale the scent of your favourite essential oil. Listen to music that calms your mind or lifts your spirit. Walk barefoot on the grass or along the beach and notice the feeling beneath your feet. Spend time in the garden with your hands in the soil. Savour a meal you love without rushing through it. These simple moments may seem insignificant, but they quietly bring us back to the present. They help us step outside the constant stream of thoughts, worries, plans, and expectations, and reconnect with what is happening right here, right now.
So much of our life is spent thinking about the next thing, analysing the last thing, or responding to everything happening around us that we forget to notice what we are actually experiencing.
The present moment is where life is happening.
Perhaps healing isn’t about becoming who you once were. Perhaps it’s about learning to embrace who you are becoming. Maybe this version of you carries a little more wisdom, moves at a gentler pace, holds different priorities, honors stronger boundaries, has a softer heart, and treasures life’s quieter moments a little more deeply.
You don’t have to become who you were before.
You only have to give yourself permission to become who you are now, and maybe, just maybe, that version of you is exactly who you were always meant to be.
That permission is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. It means letting go of the impossible expectation that you should still be the person you were years ago. It means acknowledging that every experience, whether joyful or painful, has shaped you in ways that deserve to be honoured, not resisted.
Growth doesn’t always look like becoming stronger, busier, or more productive. Sometimes growth looks like softer boundaries becoming firmer, saying “no” without guilt, asking for help when you need it, or finding contentment in the quiet moments you once overlooked.
The person you are today carries a wisdom your younger self simply could not have had. You have endured disappointments, celebrated victories, navigated uncertainty, and kept moving forward despite life’s challenges. That deserves to be seen, honoured, and deeply appreciated.
You are not falling behind because you’ve changed. You are simply becoming!
